The Devil’s in the … Ligatures

A few of us are getting close to wrapping up a paid gig — one that’s turned out to be rather rewarding and fun to work on (well, for me at least). We were lucky enough to convince the client that Heofler & Frere-Jones’ Archer typeface would be a good fit for the organization, and I’ve been enjoying having an excuse to look at it.

The one catch is that H/FJ hasn’t rolled out any web font capability for Archer (although hopefully something is in the works), so I had to do some old-fashioned PHP image generation to get dynamic text to display their typeface on the site. I got everything up-and-running but something was missing … ligatures!

Turns out I had to do them by hand — kind of a digital throwback to typesetting I suppose. It was worth it!
