Cubicle Cafe: Northern Spark, 2011 →
Great writeup of Northern Spark by Peter at Cubicle Cafe. Looks like a wonderful night, wish we could’ve made it to the rest of the events!
My night started out on the Mississippi Megalops, a project of Works Progress. The river ride was one of the highlights of the night. Learning about the river, and seeing sunset over St. Paul.
After the ride we headed over to see Jim...

It’s a radio factory in here today! That’s some Greenpoint radio flavor you’re hearing in this clip — Polish pop? 22 radios to disassemble and rebuild this weekend for Station Identification. (Photos here)

The Notion Collective to show at Northern Spark →
Check it: we’ll be presenting at Minneapolis’s 2011 Nuit Blanche, ”Northern Spark” this coming June 4-5! Our piece “Station Identification” will invite visitors to the nighttime skyline view from the top of the Foshay Tower! It’s all about listening, seeing and broadcasting from the open air observation deck. We’ll be there all night,...

Jason and Michael have just returned to New York after spending two weeks shooting screendance in Wisconsin. Both native sons were invited by the husband-wife team of Douglas Rosenberg and Li Chiao-Ping to shoot two distinct projects this January.
Douglas has been working with New York dance legend Sally Gross for the past year and a half, and their collaboration is recently taking the form of a...

Above: trailer for “The Body Show.” Stop by Portland’s Someday Lounge on Wednesday, December 15th to see the whole thing!
Early in November I flew back to Portland, Oregon after living in Brooklyn for a little under a month. I was excited to be back “home” and see most of my closest friends, family, myriad species of trees, favorite coffee shops, bakeries, fresh...

THERE IS STILL TIME…BROTHER by The Wooster Group
I was looking forward to this piece more than any other at TBA largely because, well, it’s the Wooster Group. Ironically I didn’t know what to expect.
Standing inside The Wooster Group’s first interactive, 360-degree war film the audience is surrounded by an exhilaratingly complex narrative space where the action can only be seen and heard...

TBA 2010! →
Jason and Michael are hanging out at the Time-Based Art Festival (TBA) this week, and I’m looking forward to hearing/reading their reports. We should have more from them later on, but in the meantime here’s a snippet from Michael’s blog:
The Time-Based Art Festival kicks off in full force tonight in Portland, OR, and yours truly is thrilled to be here. For those of us who...

Anyone in The Notion Collective could probably summarize my relationship with interactivity in art as well as I could myself. I’m a vocal person - what can I say? The truth is that I’m as critical of the practice (or premise) as I am excited by it. And in spite of my occasional fandom, I still hold high Sarah Boxer’s scathing review of the 2005 Boston Cyberarts festival. For me,...

In my video work I like to flirt with ambiguity. My audience members frequently mention that they were infinitely intrigued, but don’t really know why — and surely cannot verbalize their intrigue. I really like that. If my explorations in video could easily be put into words, I would probably have been a writer.
From my experience, a good percentage of the U.S. population has a problem...

"The Well" by Smog
Lately, my life has been overwhelmingly occupied with writing cover letters. This one I actually enjoyed writing.
COVER LETTERS is a project I created to procrastinate as well as stave off boredom — and for those trapped in quiet offices, it’s a great way to sing without anyone hearing. Previous cover letters have included Patti Smith’s version of Van Morrison’s...
